FAQs

Why is French press not good for you?

The French press has been in the news for awhile as an unhealthy way to brew coffee, because it's filter doesn't filter out the cafestol. Cafestol is a substance that causes the body's LDL, the “bad” cholesterol, levels to rise. This can lead to a host of health problems, including heart disease and stroke. So, if you're looking to stay healthy, it's best to avoid the French press.

How do you travel with a French press?

To travel with a French press, place the Bodum Travel French Press on a stable, non-slip surface and remove the plunger lid. Add coarse ground coffee into the press – we recommend 1 tbsp for each 0.1l of water. Boil hot water, wait 30 seconds, then pour into the travel press to approx. fill the carafe. Stir gently, place the plunger lid on top and screw on the filter cap. Allow the coffee to brew for 4 minutes before pressing the plunger down slowly and evenly. Pour and enjoy.

What is the problem with French press coffee?

French press coffee is often criticized for being "unfiltered", which means that the coffee grounds are not separated from the water during brewing. This can lead to a number of problems, including the release of diterpenes into the coffee. Diterpenes are oily substances found in coffee beans that can raise your "bad" LDL cholesterol, according to Harvard Health Publishing. And high cholesterol levels can increase your chances of heart disease, heart attack and stroke. In addition, the unfiltered coffee grounds can end up in your cup, giving the coffee a bitter taste and a gritty texture.

Does French press raise cholesterol?

French press does raise cholesterol, but not by very much. Research has shown that drinking five cups of coffee daily over 4 weeks from a French press brewing method can increase blood cholesterol levels by 6 to 8 percent. This is most likely due to the fact that French press coffee is brewed with a higher concentration of coffee grounds than other brewing methods, resulting in a higher level of cholesterol-raising compounds like cafestol in the final cup of coffee. However, this increase is relatively small compared to other dietary factors that can affect cholesterol levels, so it is unlikely to have a significant impact on your health unless you are already at risk for high cholesterol.

How is aeropress different from French press?

The Aeropress is a coffee brewing device that uses a unique immersion brewing method to produce coffee that is rich and flavorful, but with less bitterness than coffee brewed with other methods. The Aeropress is also much more portable than a French press, making it a great option for travel or for camping and hiking.
