Seeking advice on CNC vs. Laser Cutter for making rocket fins (and other things)...
Was shopping last night for a Christmas present for myself. I want to improve my capability for cutting low-powered fins from 1.5mm-2mm basswood plywood but also maybe balsa and larger sized fins in the future.
I was originally contemplating a laser cutter for this purpose but my late-night research seems to suggest a CNC machine will be more effective and flexible. I guess if I had a CNC I might also do centering rings, jigs, and other things from wood instead of 3D printing them. I also imagine I would use this to shape foam for some interesting (and lighter) rocket experiments.
Any issues or advice about this? Can a cheap CNC machine work well for cutting 2mm plywood (I cannot find anything specifically demonstrating this but it seems like it would work since it shapes and cuts many other harder materials)? I am not looking to spend more than a few hundred on this since this is just a hobby.
Considering this unit (possibly with upgrade kit to go to 300x400mm cutting area)
Sorry for the naïve question and I am sure this is answered elsewhere but too many search results are drowning out the useful information specific to this hobby.

Cheap CNCs absolutely can cut thin plywood. Just make sure to get a unit that has a stiff strong frame and good shape community support, not a Kickstarter special that promises five uses.
Also pay attention to tool compatibility. It's great if it can take a regular router from Home Depot.

Oh, and avoid the everliving hell out of cheap lasers. Fire will be the least of your worries. Endless fiddling to focus, irreplaceable lenses, poor performance at depth, and you also have only two retinas. At best that leaves you just one spare

Thanks so much for the feedback! Also sounds like I will really need to play with movement and rotation speed. Apparently this CNC does not have a high enough spindle spin rate but there are hacks online to modify by making a 3D printed mount for a higher-speed Dremmel and for $30 I can get a 20000 RPM spindle.

I have this exact CNC. You will not be disappointed. Does a great job and you will find its actually really easy to use.

Thanks Shawn -- that is great to hear!

It looks better than the method In used to cut 3/32" plywood fins for my C-Pat 24mm upgrade. I used a utility knife. Used up six blades and several hours cutting them, then several more hours sanding to get the through--the-wall tabs right.
I'll consider this or similar machines for future projects of that type.
