We've tested the locks in the order that they are listed but they are all tested in a similar manner. Each lock is set up in a secure location, test it securely, record any notable security issues, and repeat the test again in a repeatable way. For example, the Bike U Lock is set up in a secure location with a quick test being a minimum of 30 minutes. We take our lock measurements, document the test, and repeat the test again with a minimum of five testers. We repeat this process for each lock and the average is recorded. Each of the locks are tested sequentially but in a random order.
What is the difference between a U lock and a D lock?
As the name suggests, U locks are more common than D locks. They are commonly used for sliding doors. They are relatively easy to install, but are often more expensive than D locks. D locks are the traditional design that is common in Europe. They are a bit more expensive than U locks, but are more robust and easy to use.
Is a combination or key bike lock better?
Combination locks are more convenient because they require no maintenance and are easy to set. However, if you are concerned about how fast you can pick a lock, then you should use a key lock.
How much should I spend on a bike lock?
Bicycle locks are the most likely to get you into trouble, as they are the most likely to be stolen. A good quality lock will cost you much less than a cheap one, so it makes sense to spend a little more. Unless you're a very experienced cyclist, you won't want to risk your life for your bike. A good lock will extend your life - so you'll be able to use the bike for longer, and will reduce the risk of damage and theft.
