Wood is more than just a decorative building material. It's incredibly durable and water-resistant, though it does need regular care to prevent rotting and splintering. The best types of wood for planters are those that are rot- and insect-resistant, like cedar, redwood and pine. However, untreated wood planters can cause problems over time because they leach dyes and other chemicals into the soil and water. And, of course, they fade rapidly.
For best results, choose wood that is pre-treated with a wood preservative. This prevents damage from rain and other elements, extends its longevity and keeps it from discoloring or decaying. And when you're ready to plant, be sure to pour a small (1/4-inch) amount of a wood-preservative in the bottom of the planter before planting. That way, the substances can soak into the soil and protect your plants from harmful environmental exposure.
