When you think about the wide variety of plants that grow in our gardens, it's easy to forget how many of them are actually root vegetables. There's also a lot of talk about growing your own produce, but don't forget that you can also grow exotic plants—like these bonsai trees—in containers.
If you're a novice gardener and have always wanted to try growing things in pots, a vertical garden is a great choice, especially when you also have little space. That said, a good place to start is with microgreens. This is a small-fruited, seed-sown salad greens that are perfect for summer snacking, and you can grow them in little pots so they don't take up too much room.
You can also plant tomatoes, peppers, herbs, and succulents, though you'll have to provide a little extra light. Keep in mind that all of these plants need drainage holes and need to be watered frequently.
The best thing about these types of gardens, though? You can move them to any space that you already have an aesthetically pleasing container and then typically just harvest your produce as needed.
