Although window boxes are a great way to add a pop of color to your home, they can also help bring a little bit of nature inside. According to Adam Dooling, curator at the New York Botanical Garden, there are many ways to add a window box to your home and to ensure you get the most out of your flower garden.
First, choose the right plants. The best flowers for porch boxes are those that bloom all year round as opposed to annuals, and you'll want to choose plants that are hardy enough to survive the harsh winters and heat of summer. Some popular choices include azaleas, chrysanthemums, delphinium, phlox, dahlias, and snapdragons.
Next, decide on a location. Do you have a sunny spot in the yard or on your balcony that you can work with? If so, go for it! Otherwise, consider the position of the windows in your home. "The best window boxes are those that receive sunlight all day. This will ensure that the plants are thriving," says Dooling. "If you have a south-facing window, consider using potted plants with bold colors like red geraniums, orange gladioli, or marigolds. If your window is facing north, choose a more subtle flower like yellow irises, pink pansies, or dwarf varieties of poppies."
Finally, pick the right container.
