While most of these machines will make a good cup of coffee, some are simply not good. The best coffee maker under 50 dollars is a two-cup brewer with a built-in water reservoir and a permanent filter. The water reservoir is important because it prevents over-extraction by drawing off water for each brewing cycle. An inexpensive filter with a mesh filter basket that can be rinsed after each brewing cycle is also a good idea. Experienced coffee drinkers know that a metal filter basket, which removes the oils from the coffee grounds, provides the best, most consistent extraction.

If you have the space, it’s worth purchasing a three-cup machine that is capable of brewing decaf. The extra-large decaf basket helps keep the entire brew process very clean and the decaf water helps prevent over-extraction.

If you have less space and a taste for single-serve or pour-over brewing, you’re in luck. Models with a built-in water tank and small decaf filter basket are very easy to use and make great espresso as well as drip coffee.
